Find Connections to Support Your Journey

Where shared experience meets real connection.

Navigating life with or alongside someone with a developmental disability can be complex, but you don’t have to do it alone. Across Virginia, families, caregivers, and individuals have created welcoming spaces to connect, share, and support one another.

This page includes a variety of community-led and peer-driven groups, including:

  • Individual and Family Support Program - Virginia's resources for people and families.

  • Disability-Specific Networks – Groups centered on shared diagnoses or experiences, such as autism, cerebral palsy, or rare conditions, offering targeted connection, insight and support.

  • Family Support – Spaces for parents, siblings, and other relatives to share strategies, resources, and encouragement.

  • Caregiver Support – For those who support their loved ones on a day-to-day basis. Topics often include planning, burnout, and navigating services.

Note: This is not a complete list, and we know that support looks different for everyone. We encourage you to keep looking until you find your people—whether that’s through local groups, statewide organizations, or even social media communities like Facebook.

The Individual and Family Support Program (IFSP) assists individuals with developmental disabilities and their families with accessing person-centered and family-centered resources, supports, services and other assistance. The program’s primary target population is individuals on the waiting list for Virginia’s Developmental Disabilities (DD) Medicaid waivers.  The programs primary components are IFSP Community Coordination and the IFSP-Funding Program.
