Tips for Visiting Your Legislator at the District Offices

Before the Visit

  • Find out who your elected officials are before you come to Richmond! This is very important. Click here for the names and contact information of your state legislators.
  • Remember, General Assembly Session meets from the beginning of January until February or March. This is when your legislator will be in Richmond. He or she will be at the district office after session concludes.
  • Get in touch with your local chapter of The Arc before planning your visit. Find your local chapter.
  • Many chapters are coordinating days when local members of The Arc will be visiting their delegation during General Assembly session.
  • Prepare your personal story (include a picture if you can). Bring copies for you legislators and any committee members you might visit.
  • Schedule appointments with your Delegate and Senator. If they can’t meet with you, ask to meet with the legislative assistant.
  • If you don’t have an appointment. Ask to speak with the Delegate/Senator, let them know you are a constituent. If the Delegate/Senator is not available, ask to speak with the legislative assistant.
  • Plan to arrive at least 30 minutes early to allow time for parking and your walk to the Capitol grounds.
  • Prepare an “elevator speech”-if you had only 90 seconds to get your point across what would you say?

During the Visit

  • Introduce yourself, thank for the opportunity to meet, and explain the purpose of your visit.
  • Share your story, how are you affected by the issue you are discussing?
  • Share your perspective. What would you like the legislator to do?
  • Ask your Delegate/Senators to support “A Life Like Yours” for Virginians with Developmental Disabilities. Provide him/her with a reminder wristband.
