Tips for Testifying at Public Hearings
- Begin with introducing yourself and why you are testifying.
- Begin and end with a "thank you"-be respectful.
Briefly state your "key message"-what is it you're asking those in attendance to do?
- Tell YOUR story-why does this issue matter to you?
- Stay within required timeframe (2-3 minutes is a good target).
- If speaking for someone who cannot be there, bring a picture.
- If using statistics, only reference one or two in your statement.Try to keep it personal.
- Read your statement beforehand to practice timing.
- Bring copies of your statement for press/policymakers/staff.
- Take pictures and video of the hearing to share with The Arc network on Facebook, Twitter and/or YouTube.
