Tips for Testifying at Public Hearings
  1. Begin with introducing yourself and why you are testifying.
  2. Begin and end with a "thank you"-be respectful. Briefly state your "key message"-what is it you're asking those in attendance to do?
  3. Tell YOUR story-why does this issue matter to you?
  4. Stay within required timeframe (2-3 minutes is a good target).
  5. If speaking for someone who cannot be there, bring a picture.
  6. If using statistics, only reference one or two in your statement.Try to keep it personal.
  7. Read your statement beforehand to practice timing.
  8. Bring copies of your statement for press/policymakers/staff.
  9. Take pictures and video of the hearing to share with The Arc network on Facebook, Twitter and/or YouTube.
