Advocacy

The Arc's Accomplishments

Many of the supports and services that are available today are the result of advocacy efforts over the past 55 years by The Arc of the United States and its many chapters nationally:

  • Establishment of Early Intervention Services for infants and toddlers with developmental delays
  • Securing the right to public education for children with disabilities (IDEA and PL94-142)
  • Creation of community-based supports and services, including the establishment and funding of Home and Community-Based (HCBS) Medicaid Waivers.
  • Downsizing of large state institutions for people with developmental disabilities

The Arc of Virginia's accomplishments include:

  • Securing the first major state investment in community-based housing for people with developmental disabilities currently living in state institutions.
  • Leading the fight to move people off of Waiver waiting lists and into services
